November 9. 2008: What a fantastic weekend... Superpod - J,K,L resident pods - went west on Friday; spent Saturday viewing three humpback whales and then spent some time with a group of eight transient killer whales... Race Rocks is wonderful as usual... back out on the water today with a group of 12 transients; they were awesome, vocalizing, porpoising, breaching, cartwheeling... list goes on... went to Race Rocks which was great and then finished the afternoon with a humpback; what a great November weekend!!!
October 1. 2008: I don't expect the rest of October to be anything like today but I have to say that the first of October, today, was amazing!!! As we left the harbour this morning, we heard that superpod was heading north but they were still within our reach. We stopped for a few minutes on the way so that we could have a peak at a humpback travelling with her calf. Our trip was off to a great start! A few Dall's porpoise showed some interest in our boat and we finally got to all three pods just North of Turn Point. Breaches, cartwheels, spyhops, lots of whales in small groups and great vocalizations. This afternoon's trip was somewhat of a repeat of the morning; the humpbacks were much closer to home so we had a little more time with them and the residents turned around so were coming back towards us! We met up with them just North of Henry Island. The orcas were travelling in small family groups and were spread out all across the straight!!! We had some amazing views of whales breaching, tail lobbing, milling and just swimming by our boat. The weather was cool but beautiful and the lighting at 4pm at this time of year is spectacular! Wishing for more in October...
September 27. 2008: We've had great sightings the past few days. All three resident pods have been around. Yesterday morning, we went to Sheringham light where Jpod was slowly swimming west. They were quite spread out but swimming in groups and the vocalizations were amazing. We spent the last few minutes with J1, Ruffles before heading back to Victoria. By the afternoon, all three pods were at Jordan River, still going West but luck was on our side as we spent quite some time enjoying two Transient killer whales, T14 and T31. The two bulls slowly made their way to Race Rocks where the sea lions are abundant! It was a great day to be out on the water...
